Hello,

How do you rank ecommerce sites? It doesn't usually have any articles (just 50- 100 word product descriptions). Any special SEO to do on ecommerce sites?

Thanks :)

I have a dedicated ecommerce site in a very hard niche right now. The first couple things you can/should do is update your product decriptions on items like you mentions, have an "about us" keyword driven on the fornt page, and set up a blog. in addition, try to get banklinks on relevant sites, and social media should be your #1 priority.

It is hard for these sites as Google closed the spam affiliate sites that were using black hat to rank and bank. I think your best bet would be to open a pay per sale affiliate section and let them do all the work until you have enough money to advertise on Adwords and Facebook.

I'm not an expert just trying to do the same thing you are. I would add a good paragraph above the fold so google sees it's important put your main keyword in the first sentence. then put more content at the bottom of the page with long tail keywords, and have your products in between if you have different categories for products make each category target specific keywords. Don't over do your keywords put long tails as alt text in pictures. Then build links like normal.

This might not be the best way it's just what I've done and had some success with.

More content meaning the rest of your 500-1000 word article.
I've heard of people putting the rest of their content in a tab on the page saying more info or something like that. I tried this yet. I know theirs posts on it somewhere. I can't remember where off the top of my head. Good luck

I see eCommerce websites ranked on 1st page all the time.

load up some backlink analysis software and see what they are up to. Sometimes its only a few but powerful links, or massive.

Without going into detailed analytics, I highly recommend you create a separate blog for your eCommerce store. This will allow you to rank much more effectively over product based pages.

Alternatively, you can write lengthy and effective product descriptions which are almost as effective as article content.

With all that said, nothing can replace a highly informative article which helps the customer with a particular issue and recommends your product as a solution.

Make sure all of your product pages have unique and value-added descriptions. You can include additional content like data sheets and so on, if possible.

Optimise your images.

Include on-page product reviews.

Make sure your site is well structured, all products group by hierarchical categories, make sure internal linking is good.

Then build high quality links to your homepage, category pages and few to product pages.
