I work for a company with 5 ecommerce sites.

We are trying to increase our ranking...duh;)

Most of our pages have sales copy which is duplicated throughout the site. We just change the product names.

What can I focus on to improve the rankings..minus the backlinks?

Thanks.

Backlinks brother, articles and submit to article directories , some manual submits with high quality unique articles and then backlink to those with AMR or pay for a service to do it, just like you would a web 2.0..

I have an ecommerce site that is just now starting to show up on the search engines for some tough terms, the website is not highly optimized but it has some links and now they are paying off.

Right now I am diverting my funds to some other projects but I am convinced that if I attack this project again I could have it on page 1 with no issue.

Yes I know you said no backlinks, so do your best to change some of the descriptions to make them unique try to use the KW you are targeting and if you can keep density around 2-4%, make sure your heading tags have your keywords, dont be scared to use bold to highlight some of your kw's, images with your kw's, video with your kw's etc...

Dont forget social media, make sure you have a FB, Twitter, Youtube and Linkedin profile at the bare minimum.

Don't worry about product pages that much unless you are offering a really unique product that is a cetegory on its own.
Work a lot on category pages and make sure to have great (and lots of!) copy and relevant titles, H1s etc. Build backlinks to category pages and to the root site. Make sure to have a variety of backlinks, don't just blast with comments. Rank them for relevant "buying" keywords!

Re-categorize friendly URLs and titles to reflect the structure, put important keywords first. Don't forget to 301 old URLs to the new ones. That can take a lot of time, but it will help with rankings.

EDIT: I forgot to add something really important. Increasing visitors is good. Increasing conversions is what matters in e-commerce! ;)

Yes this is a big deal, a url with the KW in it really helps things along.

I have had 10 e-commerce stores that dominated the SERPS..had to close them down as a result of intellectual property problems (not willing to publicly disclose..but lets say I was selling stuff made in china).

The key is to give weight to the product pages with content and structure. E-commerce tend to have a problem ranking their product pages as a result of too many similar/duplicate pages that have the same product keywords.

Then you should do deeplinks to the product pages.

If you are interested to learn more, add me in skype: nikolaalx , I'd be happy to help out.

Cheers

I've got a few ecommerce travel sites and rank very well for most of the terms I target. I rank equally well with both home, category, product and landing pages. Original content is a must though. I've experimented with EVERY spinner out there and not one can produce reliable results, even on their tamest settings. So get writing, or get your staff writing like I did.

I totally agree with dannistone about conversions. If you're getting 1000 uniques a day and converting at 1.5%, it's way easier to double your conversions than double your visitors. THAT IS the single most important thing about ecommerce sites.
I don't worry too much about friendly url's - I did some big testing on that and see equal rankings. I don't think nearly as much weight is given to what follows the "/" as everybody says. I rank product pages well and get great click throughs sitting at #2/3/4 - just behind the hotel/resort/tour operator simply by using better descriptions. (I know googles f#*ked that up a bit now, but I seem to be getting around that most of the time.)

And just shitloads of links to lots of web2.0's and articles.

Excellent help everyone....could someone point me to a density tool which actually works.

I used the one on seo book and one of my keywords I want is .05% so I need to do some better on page optimization.

But I am grateful for all the help.

I've had great success with splash pages for categories with a bit of added unique content to help rank. Ecomm can be tough to rank in competitive fields. You're going to have to catch up with your competition in terms of link building.

if your are increase the Keyword Ranking in search engine of eCommerce site then making high quality link like that PR is 3,4,5 and also pure articles and press release submit in good site the you can get improve and that is sure to get ranking eCommerce website in search engine. but not doing spam.

i will recommend some tips:-

Start optimizing the right landing pages.
The most important link building strategy for ecommerce sites lies within the site itself - internal linking.
More on non-promotional content, less on advertising. Educating your market is the best arsenal to making them buy your product.

On-site Optimization
Regularly updated section on homepage
User-friendly permalinks/URL
Produce linkable pages
Video sitemap
Press release and news submission
Image and infograph distribution or link building through image submissions/bookmarking
Brand monitoring
Google Product Search Optimization

Been a few months since the last comment, but I'll add anyway.

I launched a custom built ecomm site in Jan 2012, currently doing 20-60K / month in sales (kinda seasonal) this is what I did. I wrote custom content on my category pages and built link wheels / bought BHW services / SB a good quantity of links to almost every cat page... worked out really well for me. Top keywords have 7m results, I'm 2-4 on the first page with a cat page.

in conclusion... definitely I will say argue that content on your category pages in addition to deep linking is valuable here. hope that helps.
