You can only get attention if you create a post regarding some issue. It may involve being creative with your headline. Make a buzz. Use the power of images. Most bloggers become famous because they create a post that is shocking. Then it goes viral. Then people would link to it. It's a simple game.

You can do it with content and social sharing alone. I've seen it work plenty of times with lower competition keywords.

Yes viral content that people can't help but share it with their friends. Don't forget to add like buttons, share buttons on your site.

No not possible and I tested it. I made a site with 10 pages of content and I just did backlinking for 1 page for some 1 week and guess what, the page which I was backlinking is on page 1 at position 6th and rest of them are not even in top 50

Moral of the story : You wont get ranked unless u get links. The easier way is to build them yourself or wait for others to link to ur site(Which is very diff unless u post something awesome and crazy along with some social media promotion)...

Its possible if you write your content with the intention of link baiting. But this requires exceptional content.

I personally dont think it is worth the effort, produce good content, but you must backlink it otherwise it means nothing.

Google gives more importance to User Experience these days. One of my clients' image based website is getting lot of long tail without no super backlinks but because of the less bounce rate and high avg visitor time. So, content should help...
