I recently took a consulting job for a company looking to increase their search rankings. Looking at the their site it has a Domain Age of 7, PR of 3, 561 links according to market Samurai. These stats out class their competition in many ways. The web site doesn't use the proper on page factors like titles, desc, headers, etc. So I came in made those changes and I thought I'd get some results pretty fast but that didn't happen what could I be missing?

Well, if it doesn't rank even though it looks like it should, then you should check if it was penalized. If not, then it probably just doesn't have enough good backlinks. I'm sure if you check the comp, they have high PR links pointing at them and your client probably doesn't.

Look up Bookmark Hero here on BHW and buy some social bookmarks for your client's site. 600 of them for $3 I think. Link those to your inner pages. You should also try finding some niche related high PR sites that you can backlink from. Search BHW, there are threads on how to do that. When you find a site, join it and make a couple of decent comments and make yourself look like you want to contribute to that forum so they don't delete you. Then after a week or so, add your client's link to your signature. There are a couple of gigs on 5er that will take an article and spin it for you like 50 times and pass copyscape. If you don't have an article submission software, you can spend another $5 on 5er and find someone who can now take these articles with your client's link (use 2 at the bottom but with different hypertext) and submit these articles for another 50 decent relative backlinks.

And use G to find out if the site has been penalized, like Adam718 says. But do that first before anything. If it has been, you're gonna have to look up how to get that site out of jail.

AND, make sure you have given the site enough time with your recent changes for the SE's to adjust its ranking. You didn't make these changes this morning did you?

    Hope that helps.

Algorithm penalty could be a possibility, when I first got access to the site there was some "buy viagra, buy cialis type garbage in the page description showing up in serps. How can I be positive that penalty is some of my problem? Is there a site that will tell me or a certain area in analytics where I can find out if I have been penalized or not?

Almost impossible to predict timescales with on page changes, sit tight and be patient.

Is the ranking at all in 100 result?

What kind of links do they have? Did they build it themsevles?

You need to check if the site has been tanked.

Also, doing on site SEO is often not enough to get you ranking.

Analyze the keyword competiton and start doing some top notch backlinks

By the way, why did you take up a job you know nothing about?
Or was there a promise of training? Otherwise start looking for another job
cos you are going to be fired soon.

No, I am a newbie but I know what I am doing for them most part (in principle). I've ranked quite a few websites for different types of keywords. This is my first time working on a main stream companies website though. One where I don't have to worry about image or penalty. The website lacks content for the most part period so I am going to go that route create some content for the home page and maybe a blog to continue content creation.

The site is currently ranking #10 and #11 for the top two keywords in the niche they were 40 and 50+ before I did the on page changes. I'd really like suggestions on where or how to build "Top notch" links.
