Hi guys

So a friend of mines owns a small business and i was doing some research and found some really low competition keywords (20 KC below using Long Tail Pro) with high search volume (500+)

I don't want to buy a domain and pay hosting as im just trying to do this on my own and was wondering if it's still possible to rank a website using a free WordPress domain?

Thanks

Yes, totally possible. Same mechanisms apply as a regular domain.

Cheap domains at porkbun if you change your mind. .coms for $8 or less if it's your first purchase

Thanks guys!

I haven't actually worked on a free WordPress domain before but im guessing I can still use the regular plug ins like yoast but limited to the free themes or possible to upload a premium theme?

Still possible but regardless of how small the business is go for something more serious and brandable.

I understand but im trying to rank it and then just add their address and contact there. Im doing it to just help them but also keep fresh

Having a decent on-page & the necessary links, you can rank as much as for a normal website, especially with good web 2.0s,
However, it's really better if you can invest in a domain & hosting as it gonna be much better in the long run and do usually have a better CTR,
It's simply something required, especially compared to the price

Thanks guys!

You can't install plugins with the free plan, the same goes for custom & premium themes, it requires a premium plan

You can do everything relating to SEO with a free Wordpress domain that a regular domain and hosting can do except it will remain the property of Wordpress.com forever.
