I guess I'm in a thought provoking mood.
What is the most important part of your strategy for ranking a website?
Are the backlinks of your competitor the reason they are ranking so well? I disagree. Technically, they are ranking directly by the site's backlink profile, but bare with me for a moment, because if you think the reason they're making the big bucks is because they have better backlinks then you have a hard and long road ahead my friend.
I once spent two weeks in a terrible state, I'd lost everything, debt collectors were knocking on my door daily, you can check my post history on this, I was begging people for help. Was that because my competitors had better backlinks? Or was it because I had not evolved as a marketer?
In fact, it was a multitude of things, I had been beaten by my own one dimensional thoughts. Backlinks backlinks backlinks, and yet they meant fuckall to the success I was searching for.
Your competitor isn't shitting on your business because they have better backlinks, they own your ass because they are dynamic, adaptable, they take risks, they have strategies in place and then, only then might they consider backlinks.
Are you a one dimensional linkbuilder? Or are you an adaptable marketer?
