    Hey Guys,

Having lurked this forum for the past ~48 hours, it seems the best way to rank is through content. This makes perfect sense to me, however how would one go about ranking a site that has little/no content such as a landing page?

    Thanks,

    Entertainment

You usually use a single page as landing page (with little content) when you are going to drive traffic from direct referrals (ie. youtube, forum links, email lists etc..), because in that case, it doesn't matter, as you leave a link to your page to click on.
I don't think you can really outrank content rich websites with a single page website anymore (at least, not for the long term). You need to have both content and links.

You can create a blog category just for googles eyes.
What do I mean by this? This "blog" link and font should be really small so the viewer will focus on the sales page.

But google will see that you have actually some content on it.
Then try to rank some long keywords.

    Focus on social media too

If your site is determined to be 100% commercial and simply shallow content(landing page), it will be demoted..... Research some more, 48 hours is just the beginning session ;)

A landing page doesn't need to rank if you're SENDING visitors to it through a page that IS ranking.(ie: youtube, blogger)
Of course if you own a domain that is brandable (Fudgemonkeys.com) people will obviously find you on #1 regardless.

    P.S.
Now someone will buy fudgemonkeys. That will be interesting.

You need to understand that there is no one definite rule on "how to rank".
Google has a complicated algorithm that covers many variables. You do one of them extremly good and you can slack with the other one. So what that means is you can cover for the lack of content with more links/good links and/or any other variable google wanna see in your website.

Will it be easier to rank with content? of course!

As for the ways to rank landing pages, I'd rather agree with @http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackhat-seo/members/80978-danms.html - they may vary heavily, depending on your site and conversion path.

As for content for this type of pages, the point is that is when someone hits such a page, they will not be ready to jump right in and use a company's products or services. That's why landing pages should be geared not only at conversions, but also at providing more info about your biz.

Creating a landing page with the minimum of content without providing the user with some quick facts about your brand isn't a good idea. As the results of lots of studies showed, conversions may greatly increase after landing pages get more content (both visual and textual).

But it's also important not to exaggerate and design your landing pages with the specific audience in mind.
