Let’s say I own a business and a news outlet with high authority wrote about it. Something like Washington Post or New York Times.

My business is pretty well known in the industry but only by people who have been in the industry for a while. I want new searchers to stumble upon the article and my business be the first they think of.

The article ranked #1 for the generic term of the product for a week in the Google News section but has since dropped off slightly.

What’s the best way to rank this “indestructible” link as #1 forever? It’s very relevant to the generic term. I am not concerned about my business’ site, just the article yielding a good review about my business.

Same as any other article... you send high quality links to it.

Try to do word research and target these words in your article

Once an article is live on Washington Post or New York Times you generally cannot make changes to it unless something is factually wrong. So this advice cannot be used.

Ok, was just wondering if I can be a little liberal with the links I throw at it. This business is all organic and I don’t have any link building infrastructure.

Generally yes, its hard to penalize those big domains. I would just hit it with some PBN links. Like money site I generally only use my PBN + guest posts but tier 2, hit it with some marketplace PBN links.

I wouldn't GSA it or anything though. Unless it's low OBL, d0follow GSA in modest quantities. There is one guy in the marketplace that has that but can't remember his name. His gig might work fine.

Abide by the Google terms. Do your site SEO basically off-page and on-page, technical SEO according to Google terms.
