I work for a company in the service industry and want to rank in the surrounding cities. We have 1 office dead center and service the entire state. I have used the setting up a fake location in the past but, was hoping someone had some insights on how I could do it without doing that as we accept customers walking in the shop as well.

It is very difficult to rank without setting up multiple locations in multiple cities in situations like this. You basically have to have the most authoritative website when compared to statewide competition. Have you set up a radius for your service area in the local listing?

Yeah I have done all of that in the past but before i started I want to make sure I have a steady plan of action. I take it your recommending I go ahead and get a usps box in each extra city from our main location?

A simple solution would be to create a web page targeting each location, ie window cleaners norwich, window cleaners ipswich, etc.
Then geo locate images on each page (http://www.geoimgr.com/) thus Google believes the photos taken and placed on that page are from that town / location.
When creating local citations also mention the other areas the business operates, rather than just the main location.
For each location have a video made up (fiverr for example) mention the location in the video, in the title and description then link to the appropriate page.
Try running a few press releases for a couple of links to each and you should be ranking in no time.
Hopefully that helps.

It is much difficult to increase ranking without using multiple locations.
You can use social media that is better place to get ranking.

This looks very genuine method to rank for local clients.
