Rank for index or sub page / article

Hey, after a lot of reading here some strange question pumped out of my head, and after 2 hours googleing I decided to ask on my favorite place. So my question is :
Shall I rank my articles for keywords or to rank my website.
Example:
KW: seo as sport, bhw is the best, reading books make you smart,
No EMD let say seohackworld dot com
I want to rank for all KW, I have articles and have posted them on my WP as a posts.
So now when I build backlinks - must I point to my domain or (seohackworld dot com) or point to seohackworld/seo-as-sport seohackworld/bhw-is-the-best .
What about sub Pages instead of posts ?

Build backlinks to the pages that you want to rank and not to the site. It is webpages that rank, not site as a whole. A homepage can rank, but not a site.
