What’s one thing in online marketing you believed strongly 1–2 years ago… that you don’t trust anymore?

Not because it “stopped working” for everyone —
but because your own experience proved otherwise.

Curious to see how thinking has evolved across different niches.

Paid ads are easier and cheaper to get return than organic search.

Are you saying ads are easier and cheaper for you now to get return than organic search? Or that was your belief before and it turned out to be the opposite in reality? i.e. organic search is easier and cheaper for you now to get return than ads ?

A year or two ago, I believed that high 'Domain Authority' numbers were the ultimate shield for long-term rankings. My own experience with managing niche projects proved that 'Topical Relevance' and real user engagement signals are far more powerful. You can have a DR70 site, but if the content doesn't solve a specific problem for the visitor, Google’s latest updates will eventually devalue those links. I now trust consistent, helpful content over chasing empty metrics

I used to think short videos always convert
turns out views are easy, sales only happen with a real funnel

Buying aged domains for instant authority.
Wasted money before realizing content still has to be good.

used to fully trust analytics, but over time I realized real signals like comments, DMs, and actual sales tell a much clearer story than dashboards ever did

I used to believe scaling faster was always better, but experience showed that weak funnels and shaky tracking just amplify losses. Now I trust controlled testing and data quality more than any “proven” shortcut.

a while ago, I believed that pumping out lots of content would automatically bring traffic, but experience showed me it doesn’t work without the right keywords, value, and promotion. Now I focus on fewer, high impact posts that actually solve problems.

i used to think “borrow authority” tactics were a legit shortcut -- like posting 3rd-party affiliate/review content on big trusted domains (or buying expired domains) and letting the domain do the heavy lifting. now i don’t trust it, even if it still “works” sometimes, because google has been explicitly cracking down on that whole pattern (site reputation abuse / expired domain abuse), so it’s just a risk timer.
