Now FishSticks is going to taddle on millions of sites..

My hope is that it is providing broad value, and that we?re doing it in a balanced, universal way (outing millions of sites )

We're working on a spam research project here at SEOmoz with the eventual goal of classifying, identifying and removing/limiting link juice passed from sites/pages we're pretty sure Google would call webspam. A score (or scores) of some kind would (eventually, assuming the project goes well) be included in Mozscape/OSE showing the spamminess of inlinks/outlinks.

We're certainly not going to be as good at it or as scaled as Google (and thus our algorithms will be relatively conservative and focused on only the most obvious and manipulative forms), but it's making for interesting research already.

Some of our team members, though, do have concerns about whether SEOs will be angry that we're "exposing" spam. My feeling is that it's better to have the knowledge out there (and that anything we can catch, Google/Bing can surely better catch and discount) then to keep it hidden. I'm also hopeful this can help a lot of marketers who are trying to decide whether to acquire certain links or who have to dig themselves out of a penalty (or reverse what might have caused it).

Would love your thoughts/feedback! Obviously, this is at the very early stages, but want to make sure we consider all the perspectives.

wtf...these guys are idiots...

i would never want to put a bulls eye on my forehead, but this does it for them...

IF they expose my sites, and i lose money because of that i am gonna sue them. I hope every webmaster will do this. Everything can be considered a slander. Only email spam can be called spam.

So all anyone needs to do is send spammy links to SEOMoz and they will be considered "spammers"?

Man, I really wish google just discounted the links instead of penalizing them... It would get rid of all of these issues....

Honestly, if the links stopped working, webspam would go away. Why spend time building links that don't work?

So exactly what gives them the authority to judge whether a site is spam or not!? How dare they consider themselves as censors. Just because they want to seriously butt kiss google does not give them the right to dump on any webmaster/site owners.

This guy is a douche.

Maybe we should flag him for spamming social engines. He spams all the time for publicity on hot topics. He also tells people to contact twitter users with large following to spread the word. It was in one of his whiteboard episodes. That is spam Rand.

Google has become so ridiculous with it's tattle tailing bs, and these Google kiss asses are even worse. This is going to get out of control big time.

EVERYONE spams, in some shape or form, and if they say they don't. They are full of shit.

My 2 cents.

He's still feeling hurt by the snuggie dog bed thing most likely.

This is not right. Right now, SEO as a sector/marketplace/industry does not have a flagship and thats what these guys are trying to do.

Normally, I wouldn't have a problem with this but their stance always seems to be "Its either my way or the highway" aka the g00gle bandwagon .

I can tell you this, seomoz does not speak for for the entire IM industry, they are just trying really hard to.

A few months from now, they will probably come out with some pathetic diagram with all these "cool" little metrics, just one more tool to add to their monthly subscription fee.

Who the hell gave HIM the right to judge us? Effing Snitch... :/

Seems a bit pointless to me:) Already admiting its not going to be as effective as googles spam catching techniques.
So whats the point? It will either catch spamming links that Google has already accounted for, or they'll get it wrong and the results will just be a completely skewed and useless version.

Sounds like this will fall over pretty quick.

Never liked that guy. I have all my websites blocked from the seomoz crawler, not sure if it'll prevent them from checking my inbound links however.
Here's how to do it:
Code:
http://www.seomoz.org/dp/rogerbot

This won't actually negatively impact anyone. It's purely so they have another 'tool' to sell and value-add to their monthly subscription. Google won't give a damn on what SEOmoz's judgment is of SPAM.

They won't but other webmaster - competitors gonna flag your sites in case it is listed on seomoz spam list.

That maybe true, but what will happen is all these SEOMoz kiss asses will go around flagging everyone and spam reporting like crazy. Google will get hammered with spam reports, and a lot of good websites will fall victim to this.

He's going to end up getting sued. He would be directly harming peoples lives and businesses.

I agree, he's only trying to get more publicity with controversial topics and try to sell more crappy software. I don't use them, I don't want them storing my data. Storing someone's website data without consent makes them liable too.

No he is trying to ruin people's sites, so he can get more clients for himself. It is revenge, because some blackhatters humiliated him, by ranking his domain for snozy dog or something like that.

He'll soon have top notch hackers on his case. He's the kind of guy you'd love to take out all his teeth with a right smack in the face. Now the thing is alot of blackhatters will start gunning for him big time.He is going to come back as the enter button on a keyboard in his next life,he'll get plenty hits then.My
own view is posts like this are free marketing for him,the guy isn't stupid but he now crossing over the line into territory he doesn't want to cross over into.
Maybe he wants a job with matt cutts.

The guys a self righteous idiot.
HIs methods are slow and VERY expensive.
They are just as spammy as any other method
(Creating a relationship purely to gain a link is spam no matter whther you automate or do it personally - it's still a cynical and one dimensional act)
Just ignore ther idiot - most people in the real world (people with websites and businesses) have never heard of him or his site..and probably never will.
