So I am ok to go back to Zero and re-learn.

I had an event to promote, so I zeroed in on a 10km zone (only locals were gonna go anyway) 4 key phrases, small spend max $50 a day and a start stop of 4 days.

I wound up with a $257 bill. How do they do that? (sigh)

The CPC was 1.11 which seems fine and I picked up 200+ clickthroughs. I think the pitch was ok, I think my landing page was soft as I didn't have a specific offer to make, just a 'this is on you might like it' approach.

However, a colleague of mine spotted my ad and he's welllll outside the geo boundary and demo and was searching overseas related material.

Google wtf.

My experience with adwords is: you set budget, we will find a way to spend it. Computer like money. BEEP!

I've got a budget to run a bunch of google ads for things over the next while, so I am going to test phrases, landing pages and offers.

The theory i want to test is this one: Can I make a yes/no offer to someone, specifically narrowed down to a demo where YES makes sense because it's what they want/like.

I'm aiming to spend on multiple pitches at highly targeted users and phrases, rather than in All Spend in one.

This first case was me literally relearning how to even use their interface and running a test. The best thinking i can muster is to run recurring tests until i see what bites.

I'll post my ongoing testing and fails as I go, and would be glad to get any comments or feedback on how to zero in, if anyone feels like making suggestions.

Meanwhile I will report my catastrophes as amusingly as I can :-)

I created a guide, I will be creating another guide talking about General Adwords information here soon. Follow if interested.
