An full service branding/web design/seo company is trying to get my business for an expensive project. They have some high profile clients and seemingly a good reputation.

They insist on me using their shared Rackspace server where they have a dedicated box:

Shared Dual Quad Core Dell Poweredge
    Red Hat 4gb DDR
    3x raid
    Managed Backup

They have 103 websites on the same IP and most of the ones I tested on GTMetrix got F/F type results for their UK sites. (but they seem fast enough to me)

They want to charge me £40 on top of their already generous fees per month and say they are not making a profit off hosting!

They say its essential to use their hosting to reduce problems with high traffic, spam control, attacks etc.

Its true they have got some high profile clients, but most of them are not on this IP.

Do you guys think this is a deal breaker or what should I ask them?

    Thanks

    DO NOT DO IT!
Never give up control of your web site like that. They can do whatever they want!
The top companies in the SEO business would think requiring you to move to their servers is ridiculous and so do I!
They can do anything with a simple log in to your existing account.... one you can lock them out if ever needed!
PS: I just reread your post, most of what they have told you are lies, so RUN. We charge what they want per month for an entire year and so do most on here offering hosting.

The issue here is NOT Rackspace, they are a great company although our competition, The issue here is the SEO company lying to you and gaining too much control over something they do not need to control!

Thanks guys. They've agreed for me to self host. They are saying the prefer clients to use their servers as they have had loads of problems with crap hosts in the past but they've made an exception because of my concerns about control.

They are not a micky mouse agency, their clients include bbc (for a microsite) and a channel 4 side project (though they don't host those).

They are a full service agency, not just seo, which I need as I am launching a brand.

    Cheers!
