There is a site up with tons of different articles, 50+ at least which has clearly been ranked with GSA throughout all the articles & HP with somewhat spammy links - this site has been up since May 2014 and is doing well.

If I used this guys links from Majestic or Ahrefs and tried to add them as he did, would I receive a Google penalty if a new Google update for example is trying to combat the very method this individual used to rank this site and articles?

You can still use GSA to slowly drip links to tons of different articles & HP on the same site can't you?

you are talking about those subdomains that people use to create contextual backlinks?

All links types are prone to a penalty upon Google's next update. The only way is to forget thinking about it and going ahead with your plan to rank and bank.

No. I'm simply saying this guy used GSA and dripped links to tons of different wordpress articles across his site.

If his site hasn't been hit since when he started it, I'm presuming it's okay to still use the method and tricks he used to rank up and stay there?

What do you mean? I'm thought all links were prone to penalties whenever.
