Quick Anchor Text Question

Say I am trying to rank for the keyword "car"...

If I use the anchor text "bright red car", will that give me as much of a boost to the word "car" as it would if I used the anchor text "car"?

SE's are smart enough to understand what your site is about and naturally people wouldn't link to your site with "car" as an anchor... people would use many many variations. so "car" or "red car" or "site about cars" is pretty much the same.

You'd need a lot of such anchors. But yes - it's possible.

Well, I outsource my SEO and I have to give them the main keywords I want to target. I can only give them a certain number of keywords otherwise the price goes over my budget, and I'm trying to rank both "car" and "red car" (examples) but don't know which to pick out of the two as my target.

In this case, "car" has 50,000 local searches, KC 28, "red car" has 4,000 searches, KC 27. It seems obvious which to target, but perhaps "red car" would kill two birds with one stone and rank me for both. But if focusing on "car" as an anchor would give me an extra boost for the 50,000 KW I would go for that.

Check out the backlink profiles as well as onpage factors of sites currently ranking on page 1 for your desired keywords and see what variations they have employed.
