Questions about submitting to web directories

Hi there,

I've set up about 10 different WP tv sites recently and although I'm new to SEO, it's been made clear from what I've read on the forum that the best way to improve my search engine rankings and also mantain good rankings is to have diverse links to my website, and also not to just link to my website, but link to places where I link to too!

I plan to do most of this link building myself through manual blog commenting and forum profiles, submitting articles using AMR, linking on Web 2.0 properties (not my own but places like YouTube, Squidoo etc), social bookmarking with BMD and also Yahoo Answers...

The one thing that I'm not so sure about is submitting to web directories; from what I've read here I understand there is software that can do this for you relatively cheaply, but this is not as reliable as doing it manually? If this is the case, that's fine, I can see there are services on BHW that submit to 100 web directories manually for only $3, and I'm happy to outsource this work because it really would be laborious!

What I don't know is how many web directories I should be submitting to! I realise there is not going to be a magic number, but with services ranging from 100 submissions to 3000, I don't know what would be ideal for me!

If anyone could advise me about this that'd be really appreciated

The services on the forum are a lot cheaper though!

I tried directorymaximizer and here is my story.
First of all, there were almost no benefits for the invested price.
Secondly i lost all my rankings for the websites i submitted to directorymaximizer.

DirectoryMAximizer submits your website to directories with no PR. It copies and paste, title, description and keywords to hundred of websites.

With google panda, it is not a big surprise to see that GOogle is able to detect such an obvious practice.

My advice: don't go there.

In all honesty, different people seem to get different results in terms of how many directories are appropriate to submit to. If I were you, I would be looking to ask the people submitting to directories how many they will usually submit to for a site like yours. You would be best off erring on the side of too few rather than too many to begin with. you can be downranked for what might be seen as "spamming" and repairing that will be trickier than just buying more submissions.
