Questions about ONpage SEO

I am having trouble with onpage seo. I read from a couple of people that keyword density should be between 2-3% while other people say that anything above 2% is over optimized.

here is my question:
1) what is the optimal keyword density for a page i will be doing link building on ?
2) what is the optimal keyword density for a page that I will NOT be doing any sort of link building whatsoever ? i.e anchor text free
3) does keyword density mean density for the whole page or just the article ?
4) what are good practices in doing onpage seo ? ( like making the keyword bold and attaching a link or making it H2 and H3..somthing like that)
5)How do you know when a page is perfectly optimized ?

Whatever you want to do with your article, don't dwell that much on "keyword density", per se.
But if you can't help but to be really concerned about it, make sure you don't go beyond 1 percent.

For example, 1 percent of a 500-word article is 5. Two percent of it is 10. You don't want to read a column in a newspaper that mentions a particular phrase 10 times or more, do you? Nobody wants to read a phrase that is present in almost all sentences.

When it comes to on-page SEO, bolding your keyword or any word does not contribute at all to your goal of getting a good PageRank. If you have a WordPress-based website, it's enough that you install WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin. Make sure that you hit that green flag.

Plus, your feature image and images in the body of the article must be optimized as well.
How can you do that?
- Set the "name" and "alt text" property of the image to your keyword-based title.
- Set the filename of your image as your article's title.
- Use the same meta description of your article as the meta description of your image.

You are paying to much attention to keyword density since overall you just need your articles to be natural
and persuasive for your clients when they read them. All you need to do is make sure your keyword density does
not go over 3% or more since that would be considered keyword stuffing.

Forget about keyword density! Your placing way to much emphasis on it

you need to write your articles for people and not for g.put the keywords that you want to rank for and you are ok.Also you need to put your keyword on your page url,i find that this helps a lot.try to rank with long tails and not for keywords with a lot of competition.

If you were a real estate agent and wanted to create a website that was going to be built with the idea of ranking 1 in google for a long, long time for many keywords in your small town. I have found the issue of keyword density to be very subjective in nature. You could literally ask 10 different people what your keyword density should be and you will probably get 10 different answers!

Personally I stopped measuring keyword density a long time ago. Make sure your keyword is mentioned at least once or twice, but as for the rest make sure your article reads 100% naturally.

Now days I look at other ways to help the search engines understand what the page is about - particularly LSI keywords and image tags

PR DOES NOT matter at all when doing on-page SEO, SERP-s do!
And no it's not enough that you install Yoast(and any other free/premium related tool) only on WP, 9/10 if you "hit" all those green flags, you will get over-optimization penalty. That being said, the plugin is good to automatically check on-page SEO factors and keyword density of the article, but you don't need necessarily to hit all those green goals.
Last but not least, read PHPbuilt's thread (link shared by another member some posts above), it explains everything perfectly!

As someone said elsewhere SEO gets more involved the further you go (and the better your site is optimised). The first basics are good content, strict coding, creating/submitting site maps & following Google guidelines. And patience. Do all this first then go deeper into SEO.

Like most people here have already mentioned, dont be obsessed with keyword density. That was something that worked 10 years ago. Search engines are much smarter now. Go for LSI keywords. That means if your keyword is "cars" use words like "automobile" "vehicle" etc. Do NOT use the words "cars" repeatedly. Its not natural and comes across as keyword stuffing.
