Questions about a social media stradegy?

Hope you are all keeping well and had an enjoyable new year.

I am just getting back into some work today, had a very nice vacation and when I checked my emails I had a very interesting proposal in my inbox.

In the past before I have been helping some local businesses with their online presence - majority of that being SEO and Instagram (they were my specialities as such).

I was recommended to a start up in the travel industry and have been working with them for the last few weeks, and basically the email stated that they would like me to become their entire social media manager for 2018.

I have never been in complete control of an entire companies social media presence before so I am at a bit of a loss. Essentially they want me to set up an annual strategy to define objectives per media, what sort of content per media and to provide the actual content on a monthly basis to their accounts. They did specify that they would also be able to provide some content aswell, but hoping that I would be able to take that over, although it would only be photos.

So essentially I am basically just contemplating all this witha few questions:

- What sort of objectives could it be that they are looking for? As in how specific do they have to be?

- Is there any "format" as such for these plans when presenting to a client?

- Do I include paid advertising etc or does that come out of my pay?

- And then of course the burning question for me: How much do you charge for providing a service like this?


Any feedback or advice at all would be awesome.

Just ask them. Honestly, it's 100% dependent on what they want to do and what new services/ products they are releasing when.

I would assume that they want you to plan their posts & create a consistent campaign across all platforms.

I would bill them for that. Depending on the client, I would maybe pay for it myself upfront and then invoice them later, but that can be tricky if you don't trust them. You could just get them to make an AdWords/FB etc account and then you run the stuff from there.

Really depends on the size of the company. How much work they expect you to do, how many social platforms, what country is it etc.

You could be looking at $500/month. Could be $5k. Could be $100. Who knows.

Yes I guess that is obviously the best way to go about things.

I just didn't want to go to an interview with them and then for them to be put off at the fact or something that I didn't even know what sort of stuff to be suggesting as objectives.

I would presume that is what they want aswell to be honest - some automation and all that stuff. As content creation is an entirely different beast.

Yes after re - reading the post I realise that it literally is the classic how long is a piece of string type thing - my bad.

I guess what I was asking is is it more effective for me to charge as a sort of build up plan? The more I am doing the more to charge for? As in running twitter, instagram and facebook is cheaper than running 2 of them? As they are a start up so I am just seeing what would be the best way to go aboutcharging them - recurring revenue is key for me, so I want to make sure I dont out price them.

Yeah, completely understand. But, if you sound knowledgeable on the subject they won't care too much that you don't understand their terms. It may just be that you have a different word for it, so just play it off like you know what they mean but actually get them to give you as many answers as they can"

100% Maybe offer a base service that includes creating a strategy and then charge a small add-on for each social media. Try and get them locked into a 6 month contract with upgrades. Make sure you emphasize results take time.

Again that is a very good point. Just all them leading questions, get them to basically say what exactly it is they need.

So in this scenario charge them for a monthly strategy - and then X amount for running of the accounts?


Again I know these questions are painfully basic, just trying to see what the best way to go about this is.

It's ok No one would know anything if they didn't ask.

So yeah, maybe charge $500/month for your basic package, which includes paid advertising consulting, content planning & strategy. And then for $100 you implement this on IG. Another $100 for Twitter etc etc. Just replace the numbers with what you think will work.

I like that alot - seems ludicrous to be able to charge for this sort of stuff, I love it!


Coukd it be an idea to perhaps see if they have a budget in mind? Just so everyone is on the same page?

For sure. But then stretch that.

If they tell you $x budget, it's 100% going to be more. But what you don't want to do is say $5k when they were thinking $500 and then they won't even negotiate.
