A client of mine has a site that mainly sells new products (not ecommerce, more like and online brochure) 11 years old- 2.5k uniques a month - PR 5 - #1 for a 2 word keyword. They have 1 page on their site that is dedicated to used products. They would like to expand their used section into to be larger and ecommerce based, but not take away from their new products.

So I am thinking either a subdomain or a new domain. Which one would be better for seo purposes. Also, should I 301 the current used page (400 uniques a month) to the new site, or just put a link on there?

Any other advise would be appreciated.

    Thanks

As far as I understand, you want to expand the page of used products to a whole section right ? As far as i know, Google treats the subdomains the same as they treat folders (subdomain.domain.com and domain.com/subfolder/). From my experience, I would use the subfolder option. YES, do a 301 from the existing page since I think it an old page and it carries some value. Also, on each page of new products you may add a "related used pruducts" widget or something like this with 4-5 links to used products pages.

I highly recommend a subfolder over subdomain. It looks much cleaner in searches and will be easier for the customers to follow.

If you want to keep your existing sales page and add more sales options i would add more pages in the form of /new-product-1 etc to the site. You can do some inner linking on your site to help spread the authority around to the new pages.

As I think I would prefer subfolder over sub domain because of two reasons first one to get trust over the website and second one is easily to follow by the user which is highly priority in seo according to the search engine algorithm.
