Questions about 301 expired domain

So I recently started a new pet authority site, while doing some broken link building I found 2 expired domains related to my niche and went ahead and bought them.

I am planning to 301 both of the domains to my category page. Should I 301 both of them at once or do one first and wait for a few days to do another one. Both of them don't have any page indexed in Google as well. Also one of the expired domain seems to be used as 301 in the past before.

The reason I'm asking is that my site domain is pretty fresh. I don't really think it will matter much. But would like to hear other opinions in BHW.

IMO 301 is bad idea. I did it twice and both times it crashed my traffic.

Why did it crash your traffic? Was the domain niche relevant? Any bad links?
 
That's not how you do 301 redirects and even if you did it as you should, those domains are too weak for you to see any results.

To even consider 301, the following must be met:

1. Really strong domain. 200 - 300 RD+
2. Very related, because you are redirecting also anchor texts.
3. Perfectly clean domain, because penalties are passed via 301.
4. Domains must be built as regular websites, aged and then redirected, not redirected from registrar or hosting level when they are deindexed.
5. And even then it might take months to take effect, if at all.

Then again, this has been talked about plenty of times here.

Thanks for your input. So I guess there's pretty much no point in 301 these domains then? They have a shitty RD and its not indexed but its getting links from some pretty old sites.
 
My 301 domains was relevant, but links amount just 15-20 for each (pretty good links).
I establish 1-3 page websites on this domains, empower it with PBN links and point to main website (I made real looking websites, not just 301).
So for main website it looks like relevant links (strong enough).

Correct. Add them to your PBN if you want, but redirects are pointless.

I don't use PBNs, hmm.
I'll just redirect them and see how it goes :)

Why do you want to direct them to CATEGORY page? Why don't you to the home page?

How do you realize that one of the expired domain has been used in the past?

So far, nothing negative. Started seeing some of my other keywords in SERP.

Because it makes more sense. Ex. I have a pet website covering varieties of animals. I have an expired domain related to cats, I'd rather redirect it to the cat page instead of my homepage.

301 works better when the expire domain have the good amount of Backlink profile history.
 
301 works, but you will need to consider what would be the link profile like for the expired domains that you have purchased. If the expired domains do not have any link profile or traffic, then they may not contribute any value back to your site.
But if it still has traffic flowing or a good link profile and not spam link profile, then you can surely just 301 those site back to your own.
One note though, if one of the sites were a 301 already, based on my own experience, this old 301 could be troublesome in redirecting properly to your site. Big G may have marked this as moved, thus they may not update the latest 301 redirection that you have placed.
