Hello BHW!
Inkedphoto_2023-05-09_09-11-48.jpg

I have an XYZ product that I am selling.
There is a "buy XYZ" keyword on google that I know people are searching for.

I have noticed some random blogs and forums in the SERP which I believe is a sign that it might not be super hard to rank for this keyword.

My competitor is ranking #1-#3 with no content at all (I suppose only backlinks).

The above screenshot is what AHREFS free keyword difficulty checker is showing me.

Does it seem to you that it might be rather easy to rank for this keyword?
What kind of budget should I aim for with this backlinks?

Should I buy an aged domain or a domain that would match the keyword?

Could you please give me a step-by-step simple plan on what I should do taking into account I dont have a website at the moment? (however already selling the product).

Thanks a lot!

The KD is subjective and you need to check the SERP and the other sites that rank there for that keyword.

The quality of backlinks plays a factor too so I wouldn't trust the Ahrefs indicator alone. If possible then use SEMrush and other tools too, they have free weekly trial I think so you should be able to do your checks and research within that week.

The number shows it is approximate. Check once how is the competition in real search results and make your move.

Check h-tags.
Is this a product page? How many internal links are linking to this particular page?
What is the pages keyword density, anchors from internals?
Does the website talk about this product a lot? Crawl the website, check how many times it mentions said keyword on how many pages.
If this website mentions this particular product, 500 times in their website, and doesnt suffer from cannibalization its probably a really competetive keyword. Just because the website and content is structured well.
Is this product listed from a category page, that ranks short-tails? (Probably impossible to beat it then).

If this is a blackhat/greyhat niche, you can check Bing search console for hidden pbns.

You should take keyword difficulties from ahrefs or semrush suggestions carefully, they mostly are determined by backlinks on that particular page, and just tells a small story, not the whole story.

Its just a suggestion!
Kindly have an idea of your competitor's site, his backlinks , products price and make your site more competitive in prices, optimization, backlink counts too - so that you can beat him

I'm guessing that your competitor has a product page ranking? If so, then the page's content is the least ranking factor to look at.

Product pages even with a title and a simple add-to-cart button (no description) could rank well if the website has a strong presence in that niche.

You need to explore the competitor overall. Look at their:

1. Backlinks (are they from authority sites?)

2. DA/DR (though this can be gamed)

3. Traffic pages (are they ranking for multiple keywords in this niche?)

4. Domain age

As for the domain name: I would copy the competitor's strategy in this case (since he is already ranking well). Go with Exact match/partial match/ or totally branded domain depending on what he also has.

Your next steps would be:

1. Create the relevant product pages (make sure to use the right meta tags and schema)

2. Start posting content in the same niche (this will boost your semantic relevancy)

3. Do interlinking from your content to product pages, and vice versa wherever it makes sense (this is very powerful)

4. Buy some good quality niche edits and guest posts (1-3 per week), and throw in some manual links like blog comments, web 2.0s, etc to keep a natural-looking backlink profile

5. Repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 till you start getting desired results

Note: An aged domain will speed things up, but make sure it has a clean history.

The keyword starts with BUY, I don't think it will be easier to rank on this unless it is a rare or unpopular keyword. Also, don't pay too much attention to keyword difficulty. There are several factors that decide who will rank and who will not and keyword difficulty is just one of them.

Instead of buy, use 'best' along with product title for better kw suggestions
Semrush's kw magic tool is way more robust imo

Agree with Hustle Tong. Making the 'Best' listicles is also a great way to rank for a buyer intent keyword. While you'll never rank in the top 3 (because most searches have direct buying intent), you can still secure a rank in top 5 or top 6 rank and get traffic from people who are tempted to look at options.

What is the search volume for the keyword? Take a look at the link profiles of your competitors and find out what types of links they have. You can then figure out your budget if you wish to build backlinks.

All my suggestions are purely based on practical experience from my websites.
If I was in your place this would be my approach.
With all the info you have provided in OP this should work to rank your website for that target keyword.

Since it's a commercial intent buyer keyword.
Get a recently expired domain in your target keyword niche.
The expired domain should have quality backlink profile with minimum 75% backlinks from authority websites that are in the same niche or related niche.
Ideally RD should be minimum 50+.
As mentioned above get a recently expired domain as it is most likely to have pages indexed so that minimizes indexing issue.
The more age of the domain the better.

Now based on the top10 SERP results create your content plan and cluster your keywords.
Keywords should include longtails and questions.
Based on these keywords create your landing page for that product.
If possible, create a YouTube video for your product, with main keyword in title and description and include link to the website in video description.
Embed this video on the website too.
Using the PAA questions for your product buyer keyword create FAQ section and include the FAQ schema.

Once you have your main landing page ready create related child pages around related topics mostly the questions.
Interlink these child pages and main page.

The expired domain can cost you good money, but it will bypass the headache of indexing, brainstorming and spending on backlinks.
You should expect spending a minimum of $300 for a good, expired domain here.
I have noticed some random blogs and forums in the SERP
Look for more forums & community pages (like active facebook groups and subreddits) related to your niche and use them wisely to drive traffic to your website.

Hope that helps!
