[QUESTION} Sending International Payment using Paypal

Hey good people. I live in the UK and need to pay a friend of mine in Canada over paypal. I have never sent money before using paypal and had a few questions if anybody would be so kind as to answer. I came across this link https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/cross-border-and-conversion-fees but still do not properly understand some things.

- What currency do I select when I send the money to him. Is it the currency that he uses (i.e Canadian dollars) or the currency that I use (i.e Sterling)?

- Can somebody please work out how much it would cost for me to send 1000 USD equiv to him so that he receives the money in Canadian dollars. I don't want to link my bank account so it would have to be payment funded by debit card fees.

- Are the fees taken out of the balance sent? i.e if I send X amount will he receive (X minus fees) or will he receive X amount and fees paid by me?

its fairly simple. you cant send in his currency unless he sends you invoice. if you send $1k, deduct 5.5% from that. its what he will get. you wont have option to send in different currency than your account.

Thanks for the reply. Now I'm even more confused. If I send in GBP then what currency will he receive in? Also I need to send an exact amount to him, how do I go about this. I thought if I pay fees he would get all the money? Thanks

If you send it in GBP, he will get it in GBP. If you select that you're paying services, he will have to pay the 5% commission that PayPal takes from the sum that you send. If you select "friends and family", you will have to pay the commission.

If you click around on PayPal, you'll understand. The system is pretty simple and intuitive. Goodluck anyways.

Thanks. The poster above said that I couldnt send in his currency. Assuming I can, do I select CAD and send? I want to make sure he doesn't pay any fees and gets the entire amount. It's a friend I owe money to.

Create paypal account, send amount in USD, GBP or CAD the person will get amount in the same currency you send. Deduction will be applied on receiving end. Thx

Thank you that makes sense to me now. Will it notify me before sending how much fees will be deducted on the receiving end? How do I work out how much more to add for fees so my friend receives the exact amount? Cheers.
