Question regarding the usage of "|"

I dont know what you call "|", separator or whatever lol, my question is

Im using | in my meta title description for my website.

ie,
Big Balls| Big Black Balls

Is it ok if the title of my inner pages/posts be like

Lexington Steele|Big Balls| Big Black Balls

I want to rank my inner pages as well so do i do away with my domain meta title in the post title? and just leave it as "Lexington Steele"

If I saw that it had 'Big Black Balls' in the title I'd probably shut off my computer...

The "|" is called a "pipe", which ironically relates to your keywords

As to your question, if the keyword you are targeting is "Lexington Steele", if "Big Balls" and "Big Black Balls" are not related to "Lexington Steele", you are better off leaving them out. Less clutter is better for search engine rankings as it is closer to "Exact" if that makes sense.

Using | is fine.

I use it in my meta titles as well.

Using 2 of these "|' in a url wont affect seo negatively?

If their is a direct relationship between the two tags on your home page and the key phrases you are targeting on your inner pages - I would pick one of the two home page phrases, the core one, and use that in addition to "Lexington Steele" on the inner page. In your example that would be "black balls" I can only assume. The best choice for inner site page title tags, IMO, assuming their is some sort of relationship between home page and inner page main key terms would be [inner page key phrase | main site key phrase]. If you put the inner site key phrase and then both of those extra terms, its diluting the title tag to much, and frankly chances are its just way too much black balls for Google to handle effectively.

No, I use 2 of them in my clients titles all the time, as long as it relevant to the page you will be fine.

Think of each page like a book. Titles, descriptions, keywords, h1's, and content should all match up. If you buy a book about 1980's rock bands, it should be about rock bands in the 80's not the 90's.

Just also remember, its usually best practice to keep your tittles 70 characters or less.

Example: Big Balls | Big Black Balls | Why Are Black Balls Big?

Edit: It has also be shown that google reads the titles left to right and gives more importance to the keywords at the front, ALWAYS use your main keyword first.

It won't affect it dramatically no. But if it's unrelated to the keyword you're targeting, you would probably better off without it.

It won't make a huge difference though.

Pipe is fine. Lexington Steele does relate to big black balls. I only know this because its a sex toy keyword ... not for any other reason ;p

Using "|" is just fine if the two keywords are not directly related like

Mouse Cap | Mouse Hat

Now if we have keywords like Mouse Cap, Mouse Small Cap then I would prefer following

Mouse Cap - Mouse Small Cap

Although some times you need too many keywords in title and you cannot avoid them then I would prefer to have | and then make sure that all those keywords are some how put in H1 in different parts of the page or the page branches off to different pages with those keywords.

Here is another mouse example with too many keywords.

Mouse {Accessories|Head Gear} | Caps - Small Caps - Big Caps | Hats - Small Hats - Big Hats

Here I would have at least 2 H1's and 4 H2's/H3's

OR link away to atleast 2 pages [Mouse Hats and Mouse Caps]

All H2's/H3's should have a related image for excellent results

If you have a How To in your page for H2 like

How to wear a mouse small cap?

Wear is a verb means actions [wearing] should be followed by a resulting video which tells exactly how to wear a "mouse small cap". If there is no video available then at least 3 images can complete the action of wearing.
