Question regarding keyword research

Hello everyone,

I have been dipping my toes in a little bit of everything lately and was doing some keyword research today with the intention on creating a niche site using amazon affiliates.

I found a keyword with just under 50,000 monthly searches and low competition with a bid of $0.40.

The other keywords are mostly medium and low competition around it but not nearly as many searches.

My question is, with those stats (50,000, low comp and .40 cpc) is it worth starting an affiliate website focusing heavily on this keyword and the keywords around it?!

Low competition from google's keyword planner doesn't reflect how difficult the keyword will be to rank. It just means that not a lot of people bid on the keyword to advertise through adwords.

Run your keyword through Keyword Revealer, and it will give you a better idea. The tool is far from perfect. Just use it to decide whether is worth investigating further. If it doesn't give you a "low" score in keyword revealer, then you will probably need a budget to rank it.

Well said. Often people get misguided seeing the "low competition" remark within the keyword planner. Run the keyword in google and see who owns the first page now. Are there any obvious affiliate sites? If yes, that's a good sign to start with.

A keyword getting 50K searches per month is probably not a low competition keyword. Most low competition keywords have much less search volume than that. I suggest you target keywords with 3K to 5K monthly searches when starting out.

i usually search for keywords that have monthly searches around 5k-10k..

its easier to rank and sometimes the competitions are around low - medium..

Low competition is what you will need to review further, as there are ways of analyzing that. What you are given on keyword planner is for adwords.

Since you are making an Amazon site CPC doesn't really matter for you. You need to figure out the KW competition. You can do that by downloading the free version of the Market Samurai or by using SEO Quake and studying the SERPS yourself. I am doing the same thing nowadays and I have realized that it is a log tedious process. the good thing is that there are a lot of great things to be learned.
