I have got one niche relevant good expired domain with quality links. However the domain was redirected earlier also to different website.

Will it be a good idea to 301 redirect the domain to my money site now?

301 redirects are harmless. Check where it was redirected. If it was redirected to some obvious shit scam spam site, then stay away, just in case that the redirected domain was spammed to some extent as well.

If all looks good, then there isn't a problem.
