Question/Problem re: Google position .com vs. .ca etc

Hey guys, need some input on this problem I gave myself.

I was ranking on page 2 for a very competitive keyword for my domain which is a .com (I'm located in Canada, not that it matters) and I was consitently on page 2 or 3 in both searches google dot com and google dot ca

Then I thought... hmmm I wonder if I select target US (in webmaster tools there is the option) and I figured hmmm more people in US I wonder if it will boost my dot com ranking. Well, It didn't boost it, but after a few days I dropped down to low page 3 results and had to work my ass off to push it back to page two (took me 2 weeks to get back to page 2)

Problem is I am nowhere to be found on the .ca results, anymore, I mean nowhere.

I switched it back to having no preference in my webmaster tools about 2 weeks ago, and my rankings have been climbing steadily for google dot com, but I still am not anywhere in the google dot ca results.

Any ideas?

I'd like to rank highly on as many google networks as possible.

Should have left well enough alone, I know.

How long were you ranking at #2 in Google for, and how old was your site at the time? Could be that webmaster tools isnt the culprit but just the natural yoyoing of results.

That's weird. It's possible that your robot.txt is misconfigured

Use Google Webmaster Tools to see about errors:
