There is currently no real way to force a window to open up in a new tab. The new CSS3 specifications will have that I beleive once they're fully adopted. Currently the best bet is use use the target="_blank" link argument and hope the browser prefers sticking them in tabs over windows.

_blank can do new tabs--depends on the browser configuration. (But you have no control over this nor can you even tell if it's true.)

There is no way to do it. Tabbed browsing has fairly recently hit mainstream (by recently I mean a few years...) and so the current standards do not differentiate between a new tab an a new window. Also IE (the biggest market share) just recently switched over to tabbed browsing--yet another reason for any sort of tabbed vs. window standards do not exist yet.

almost all new browsers with default configuration do not open a new window, but new tab
