Question: iPhone, proxy, apps

I have an iPhone 3G. I used a private proxy to surf - I checked the proxy location on Safari and it tells me the right location where the proxy should be. However, when I use an app, it knows my true location.


Is there an app to avoid this or a work around?

You can try a VPN, but the problem is some apps don't communicate through normal ports. I went through hell trying to sniff packets on this one app because it was using a socket to communicate and it wasn't routing through my proxy settings, but rather my default wifi settings. Took a while to figure it out, but it sounds similar to what's happening with you here.

Yup some apps will ignore the proxy. Because there are other ways to communicate with the server e.g a Socket connection

BTW - my phone is jailbroken 3G. Any iPhone proxy worth getting that will be fool proof with the apps.

Is it possible that the app is using GPS to detect your location?

I disabled the location services and refused to have the app from using it. Let's see if that works.

Well, i think that the problem is you have a http proxy, you can solve this problem changing your http proxy to socket proxy, because the apps use diferent ports to conect or have conections per socket

Can you point me to a link to how to do that on an iPhone 3G? I googled it several times but can't find a decent how to page or a step by step processes.

You can to try install Dante, its a socks5 proxy for linux, if you put in Google, how to install Dante (and your linux Distr) you will find a lot of tutorials.
