[Question] How to choose the right keyword for targetting?

Hello Folks!

I have been trying my hands on AHREF, thanks to BHW members who have helped me immensely with their inputs.

I am search for a keyword - for eg. best bicycle for kids below 5 years. which is a low competitive keyword. But, along with the keyword, I get to see a Parent Keyword also which is different from the one I am searching.

The parent keyword shown as 5 years kids bicycle. And their is a Top Keyword (shown as the keyword that brings the most traffic) which is showing as - kids bicycle. My question is which keyword should I keep as primary and how should I go about creating a keyword group so that it helps me write effective content.

the thing with "parent topic" in Ahrefs is a good one in my opinion because Google doesn't rank pages anymore based on a single keyword, but rather based on the topic of the page, and topics can (and should) include multiple keywords.

In your case, if you feel like you can rank for the topic "kids bicycle" create an article that contains the keyword "kids bicycle" in the title of the page, as well as in the first paragraph of your article and - optionally, depending on the toughness of your competition and / or strength of your domain - also throw that keyword (kids bicycle) in a H2 or H3 heading. And the other 2 keywords ("5 years kids bicycle" and "best bicycle for kids below 5 years") throw in the article, as well, so you can target those keywords and get traffic from those 2 keywords, as well.

Actually, better yet, check out what other keywords Ahrefs puts under the "kids bicycle" parent topic and throw those keywords into your article, as well. And if you're gonna target the "kids bicycle" keyword I would actually create a H2 sub-heading that contains the keyword "5 years kids bicycle" as well because this keyword is the next in importance in the hierarchy of the "kids bicycle" topic, so it deserves its own sub-topic in your main article, which is why you want to give it its own special H2 sub-heading.

And if you feel like targeting "kids bicycle" is too tough (tip: it probably is), then simply go for the next keyword in the hierarchy, which is "5 years kids bicycle". Which means, put this keyword in the title of your article, in the 1st paragraph of your content, and - again, depending on the toughness of the competition of this keyword, and your domain's strength - you can optionally put it in a H2 or H3 heading as well

I initially started to look for long tail kw and found - best bicycle for kids below 5 years.

This longtail is easy to rank for here in my example as there are not much content written.

So, I felt I should write about - Best Bicycle for kids below 5 years as the title.

Now, I am reading about your suggestions as well. And yes, kids bicycle is a tough keyword as it is too broad, I feel.

Target the main keyword kids bicylce as it is bringing the most traffic.

What I do is to put the keywords I find into a KGR (keyword golden ratio) test to be sure that they are easy to rank unless you are looking to get into the backlink ranking war.

Main keyword has high competition. I do not think I should. The longtail keyword has less competition.

Yes. KGR is good. But, my question is on targetting the right keyword out of 3.

Do your competitor analysis whichever website ranks on top do their analysis and search for which keywords they are ranking this way you can target the right keywords!

The parent search query or kw will be super competitive
Its always better to stick to long-tail clusters

You can use the use that keywords as primary keywords and for the other keywords that you are getting you can use them as a secondary keywords as well

Yes. I also feel Long tail and few LSI should be a good strategy.

If you want to rank a website for local. Use that city or name in your website content with keywords.

Also, if you want to rank website use keywords in H1, H2, and H3 use silo content structure to rank your website. On page is most important for ranking you can rank your website on the basis of content backlinks are not that important to rank your website.
