Do you think Google now “trusts” links more when they support existing relevance rather than create it?

I’m seeing links work best when they reinforce topics a site already ranks for, instead of trying to force new ones.

Curious how others are approaching this in 2026.

Yes, many SEOs are seeing better results when links reinforce existing topical relevance rather than force new themes building authority gradually and naturally still seems like the safest long-term approach.

There is nothing like new topics. Either the links are relevant or they are not. Google wouldn't bother if you plan to write topics around niche of backlink. Niche relevant, contextual backlinks are always better.

Honestly, I’m seeing the same thing lately. Links seem to work way better when they support pages that already have some relevance or movement, instead of trying to push totally new topics.

On a couple of small sites I’m working on, building links to pages that were already ranking in top 20 gave much faster results than trying to force fresh keywords. Feels like Google wants topical signals first (content + internal links), then backlinks just act as a booster.

These days I usually build out content clusters and internal links first, let things settle, then add backlinks. Seems safer and more consistent.

Just my observations though — curious what others are seeing too.

In my opinion, that’s true. Google now evaluates links more based on relevance and context, so backlinks work best when they reinforce topics a site already has signals for.

Instead of using links to “create” new topics, I think links should be used to strengthen topical authority. New topics should first be built with content and internal links, then supported later with backlinks.

Yes, links seem to work best now as “confirmations” rather than signals of discovery building relevance first with content, then using links to strengthen what Google already understands, has been far more consistent lately.

I completely agree with what everyone else has said. I suggest that you focus on links that organically reinforce the themes that your site is currently an authority on. First, work on making content clusters and internal connections. Then, employ backlinks to make sure they are relevant. This is usually the best strategy to get consistent results.

Yeah noticing same thing. Building links to pages that already have some traction works way better now. Feels like Google wants to see you "deserve" the push first.

It really comes down to trust. Google seems to value links more when they support topics you already cover well, rather than trying to push your site into something new. Reinforcing what’s already working feels more natural, and it usually performs better, too.

you seem to be onto something there... if its already ranking... why not give it some further nudge in that direction ?
