Hi, Im curious about something I have been testing with already indexed pages, if a backlink is added to an existing article, does Google normally recrawl the page soon enough to discover the new link or can it take weeks?

I understand that the page doesn't need to be indexed from scratch, but the updated version still needs to be crawled.
Have you actually tracked this in Google Search Console or with crawl data?

I would be interested in hearing real world experiences especially how the crawl time differs between strong, frequently updated websites and smaller sites.

There isn't really a fixed time. A strong site that gets crawled often can have the updated page picked up pretty quickly, while smaller sites can take much longer.

from what i have seen this tends to depend very heavily on the website itself. websites that google indexes quite often can have a new backlink picked up by them relatively fast within a few days usually. for smaller websites it may take longer particularly if the page is not inddexed as frequently.

In my experience, I wouldn't assume that adding a backlink means Google will discover it immediately. A frequently updated, well-connected site may get recrawled relatively quickly, while a smaller site can take considerably longer.

Also, getting the page recrawled doesn't necessarily mean the new backlink will immediately influence rankings. Crawling, processing the link, and any ranking impact are separate steps.

It depends a lot on how often Google already crawls that site. On active authority sites, new niche edits can get picked up within hours or a few days. On smaller or stale sites, it can easily take a couple of weeks.

The page being indexed already doesn’t mean Google has seen the new link yet.

It depends on the site's crawlability, nothing more.

It can take days, weeks or even months.

Link insertion is very good because the links are recrawled and indexed at different times, so the interval makes it natural and safe.

From what I've seen it can vary quite a bit pages on strong sites that get crawled regularly can be picked up fairly quickly while smaller sites may take much longer i would not expect a fixed timeframe for every niche edit
Yeah, that’s been my experience too. Crawl frequency can vary a lot depending on the site, page importance, update frequency, and how well the page is connected internally.

Exactly. An already-indexed page can still contain changes that Google hasn't discovered yet. The key factor is often how frequently Google revisits that particular site and page.
On active, frequently updated authority sites, a new niche edit might be crawled within hours or a few days. Smaller or stale sites can take much longer, sometimes weeks.

That's depends on the crawl rate of a particular site. The timing depends on how frequently Google expects that page to change and its crawl priorities. That backlink doesn't need to discover all of a sudden just because that page is already indexed. Google need to recrawl that page and it notices the changes. It might take days, weeks, even months.

Yes, Google can discover a newly inserted link when it recrawls the existing page, but there isn't a fixed timeframe. Google says crawling can range from days to weeks, depending on the site and URL.
In practice, frequently updated/high-traffic sites tend to be crawled more often, while smaller or less active sites can take longer.

I think if you understand how often your page is crawled, you will answer this yourself. Your overall site and the level of traffic it spikes are factors you should consider. Good traffic means, your new backlink will be indexed pretty faster - probably in days.
