[Question For Full-Time IMers] Where Do You Do Your Work?

Yes, I know most of us will do our IM stuffs at home, but where else do you go to do your work?

Private Office? Library? Cafe?

I have my own office, but I feel it is an unnecessary liability as it cost me $900 a month. But without an office, there's no where else to do my work other than at home or public cafes.

So where do you all hang out to do your work?

i am currenly working from home, but i think it is better to have an office since at home you have all the possible distractions you can imagine. At the office you can minimize the distractions and can better focus. I will definitely find an office as the next step.
 
Work from home also but most of time need to go out visiting clients
 
Work from home don't make enough to rent a office + don't need one.
 
currently working from home , everyone thinks I am good for nothing and keep sending me to do mundane tasks . I plan either to ask one of friends to hire me so that I can move to another city , or go to nearby library daily .
 
My local co-working space. You should join just for the community.

Working at home gets old after a year, travelling too.
 
I work in my personal office , near my Computer Shop ... It is only way for me to have full control under everything :)

I don't have monthly costs eg. for office rent , I pay just basic stuffs as electricity , water .... :)

I have an office for my offline business which my partners are managing but i choose to work from home. Although it can be distracting at times, the time it takes me to prepare and travel to office and back is just not worth the effort. Also, I get to spend more time with my family.

Yeah, that's the exact problem I'm having... if I were to work at home all the time, I will get bored and feel like I'm wasting my life.
Sometimes I feel lazy to go to my office too... because it takes 1 hour to get there (and another hour to go home). Not to mention, IM can be unpredictable (google updates, .etc) and imagine one day your income is wiped out and you still have 11 month lease term to pay for your office.

Another Problem is, my friends are having 9-5 jobs and they are usually too tired to hang out at night.... not to mention, I'm an introvert so I don't really like talking to new strangers. So my social life is low lol.

If you are manking some money working at home, theres no reason to think youre wasting your life, its actually the opposite.

At least im totally ok with that, screw what society says youre "supposed" to do.

Getting distracted and lazy because youre home is easy to get rid off, you just need the right midset.

Those are unnecessary $900 a month spent :p

Why Not home ? Would Save you the Time to go to the Office.

Here's a tip i use to make it feel more like an office.

Get a wide table
Dress up nice
Have 2 phones, 1 business, 1 personal life, dont really pay attention to the personal one unless it's your wife calling you for the 10th time
 
The thing is... like others said, at home there's too much distraction.

Here's the weird thing about me. When I'm at home with my laptop... I will end up mindlessly surfing the net, watching documentaries or stupid videos, surfing pornos, and playing games.
But when I'm outside with my laptop OR in my office, my productivity is 100%. I won't even surf FB or check my mails... I'm just doing my work all the way.

But sometimes I can do my work at home, but usually it is like at 50% efficiency rate.
Ironically, as stated in my previous post, I am lazy to go to my office sometimes. Maybe like just 2-3 times a week.
And ironically again, if I don't have an office, I scared I might become lazy or inefficient. lol

And my office is the most 'value for money' in the market (Singapore is facing a huge property boom/bubble as you know). It's about 170-200 sqft, with utilities and internet included. 24/7 accessible.
Usually other office offers outside are like $800 for 100 sqft with NO utilities included. And not 24/7 accessible. But right now I feel $900/month is pretty expensive. $900 can be put to other better use like getting a car or better yet, into investments.

I don't know. Sorry, I'm in a dilemma here. lol

you can't work from home... your productivity goes to the shitter ...
If you work somewhere comfortable you will most likely diss work and do other stuff...

I work from my basement. I keep the temperature at 18C so I can easily distinguish the work space from the rest of the house.
Everything on my desk is work related, aka pen, some post its and some bills I need to pay.

I work from home, but I created an office at my house and noone is allowed in during the workingday (only my cat). My productivity is quite good, maybe not perfect but good enough. I love the fact I can work from home and don't want anything else anymore.
 
Good question. I find it hard to concentrate sometimes. I tried working in:

Shared office
Private office
My university
In my kitchen
In my living room
Office in my house
Coffee shops

None of them worked.

But I have now found something that works for me.

Sitting up in bed, laptop on my lap, rapcore/rap metal msuic on very loud. Can do it from 9am-11pm without getting distracted. I would prefer to work in a private office, but it didn;t work for me. Maybe when I'm rich I'll make my office into a bedroom :P
