I have just purchased my domain for a new business. The arena that I am entering is not that competitive...maybe a dozen or so websites with any sort of real traffic (200 plus uniques per day).

All my competition have static pages..nothing ever is updated. I am going to have a forum which discusses the major keywords that I am looking to rank with....so it will be unique content generated daily.

I should have between 2000-5000 unique per day.

What would realistically be the fastest I might expect to rank on page 1 of Google?

Register your domain name for longer than 3 years.

If your onsite SEO is solid then I would expect you to start ranking very high (maybe #1) for long tail keywords.

And if you keep the content fresh and updated then I would expect you to be #1 for your target keyword in no longer than 4 months.

without knowing you exact competitors, your niche, etc... you cannot answer questions like that

I would not count on a forum for your SEO. If the niche is truly not that competitive, than you will have better luck with a blog. You need a lot of people to participate in a forum to make google stand up and notice it. Especially since forums usually have dynamic URL's. How do you plan on getting people to participate in your forum? It's a lot harder than just building one and hoping people post, it can take years to get decent participation.

A blog on the other hand only needs you to participate. You can probably only add a blog twice a month with new, unique content and see better results than starting the forum.

I agree with the blog idea, you can have a regular static website (like your competition) and also have a blog on the same domain, www.mydomain.com/blog or something like that.

You should be on the first page within a few months, if you have decent backlinks and good on page SEO. I was on the first page within 3 months for not so competitive niche, with not too many backlinks to my site.

Blogs are also less time consuming. You can set them up to run from a delicious.com feed and set up google reader for your keywords. That + comment approval to avoid scrapebox is 5 minutes a day max. In comparison, with a forum you have to interact with people and delete all the posts by BHW members linking to the latest thing a local mom discovered on a daily basis.

You know who you are. :p

Why not the best of both worlds? Setup a wordpress site that will be more or less a static site. Add an article per week or so, just so its updated and always has new content. You don't need to go crazy with an article a day. But also setup a forum on the same domain, like domain.com/forum. Your wordpress site will drive the SEO in the short-term (<1year) and the forum will drive the SEO in the long-term (>1year).

The blog will also drive traffic to your forum, as it has content that people will be searching for. You can also submit the articles on your blog to online article directories, where they will have greater exposure and can drive more traffic to your site and thus your forum.

The most important part though is perseverance. Especially with forums, it takes a lot of work until you start seeing results.

Forum usually takes time to get rank well, Not like blogs, Well keep on posting and try to be active all the time. . It will rank but it takes some time. . And also make sure that, your on site Opt is good. .

Thanks

I actually purchased the Vbulletin Publisher Suite which has blogging capabilities. It is set up so that any post or article of my choosing can be added to the blog, so literally the blog could have countless updates each month.

When you guys say backlinks, you simply mean other websites linking to my website don't you?

this sounds like an algebra 101 word problem.... lol

but for your particular niche/keyword, you might be on page 1 very soon...BUT it might not get you a whole lot of traffic overnight if it's not a heavily searched term.
