(Question) Expired VS Dropped Domains + How To Find Them

Hi,

I am interested in purchasing an aged domain that has PR that is either expired or dropped.

My first question is what is the difference between an expired domain and a dropped domain? From my understanding once a domain is dropped the age of the domain and PR is reset to 0 in googles eyes. An expired but NOT dropped domain retains it age and PR when it is registered. Can you please confirm if I have this correct.

Also, where would the best place be to find aged high PR domains that are expired and can be registered for the price of registering a domain.

I think you are referring to the different between a domain that is in the drop period (expiring) and one that has actually dropped. It is possible to backorder or drop catch a domain so that you get it the instant it is actually available.

Ultimately there is little difference between a dropped or expired domain.

You can buy aged domains that have not yet dropped from auction sites and you will have a lot to choose from but you will pay over the odds for them, upwards of thousand dollars plus is not surprising at auction. You can crawl them manually or you could use a tool such as the one in my sig that will trawl through every auction site and combine all of the results for free and allow you to check PR, whether they are indexed, the social shares, backlinks and even Moz and Majestic stats etc.

My preferred way of finding aged domains is by searching for them, by searching in a search engine for a given keyword and then crawling each of the results to find links to domains that are available, this way you get niche relevant domains that have at least some presence / backlinks in your niche.

Another popular way for finding backlinks is to crawl a specific authority site (think Wikipedia, cnn, huffpo, bbc etc) and again check all backlinks on each page to see if any of the domains are down, this is a good way of getting domains with backlinks from very prominent and highly authoritative websites that work great in PBNs.
