no matter how you'll burn, smash, or decimate the hard disk.. you'll wife will still find out everything. :-)

Depends whom you're trying to hide from. Also in US and some other countries having an encypted HDD won't fly in court as they can demand the password and if you don't provide it they assume you're guilty. Also while cracking a strong password isn't possible for most, somebody with high resources like NSA might be able to bruteforce using a supercomputer. Like 7 years ago or so they were able to bruteforce SSL128 in 2 seconds flat. That, assuming they don't already have a solution for easier cracking.

That aside, if somebody beats the shit out of you, tortures you or somebody dear to you, you will tell them the password yourself. So, I guess sometimes actually destroying something is the way to go. for most cases and most people, yeah encryption is great.
 
banks and other institutions that value their data so much pass hard drives through a strong magnetic field, and the hard drive still remains usable after that.

For the rest of us, I think a detailed format sector by sector, not a quick format, should do the trick. Takes hours and hours to finish though.

The HDD does NOT need to be in one piece for it to work!

Each shard/piece of that disk contains READABLE DATA such as email addresses and other interesting info that CAN be used as part of any POLICE INVESTIGATION into any nefarious dealings.

FROM SHARDS ALONE, YOU WILL BE CAUGHT BY THE FEDS!!!1111!!!!11!

call Chuck Norris to help you do it, this way you will know for sure that no one will recover any data from that hard disk :)))))
 
Three steps that are guaranteed and safer than using acid.

1.wipe it out with dod or guttman via kill disk.

2.If you have a stun gun, use it on the hard drive for at least 10 seconds/ alternative is to use a magnet.

3. Smash it with an iron mallet while wearing an eye guard.


The first step is already good enough but the other two are my contingencies.
 
Write to it one last time with a really critical file that you need and don't have a backup for. The hard drive will then sense your fear and fail completely on its own within minutes of the write.

Wipe using open source Eraser utility on a mechanical drive or Roadkil's Disk Wipe on USB or Secure Erase on a SSD and then remove the cover and hammer to your heart's content is the most complete way.

In most countries if you don't provide password after court order its consider contempt of court.
 
Use Powerful Magnet.
Burn It.
Drop it on Salt.
Use Hammer.
Play Cricket with it!
there are many other ways.. :P or give it me!
 
Cooking it in the microvawe should be actually enough) Can boil it afterwards if needed)
