I wouldl ike to know which tool you are using to monitor your websites when they are down? I have found a few free tools online, but not sure if they are stable.

Any input please?

Use UptimeMonitor....It has a free version with enough features....Free Check with instant Email reports if Down and when back up for every 5min...Use it for all my websites....really cool :)

I also was in need of such service to monitor websites few months ago.
I ended up with 3 services which I use all simultanously (just to be extra super safe)

1. Monitoring with Google Docs http://www.labnol.org/internet/website-uptime-monitor/21060/
2. Uptimerobot
3. Statuscake

So far all 3 services were pretty much reliable as they all notify me nearly at the same time (max. 8-10 min difference between all)

If you have access to your server, New Relic without a doubt. It's free and you'll get a LOT of useful data, making it easier to isolate problems.

Btw, alerts can be configured to work with external services like HipChat, PagerDuty, emails, etc.

Use uptimerobot, it's free and has many cool features. I have it checking for keywords in 53 domains and I don't pay a dime. It also sends notifications to my android phone and iphone (can also send to email).
