Let's say the topic is acne, and i have long tails I'm targeting "best acne treatment amazon" and "fast way to get rid of acne in a week".

When I create a web 2.0 buffer, do I have to include the long tails on the buffer site to rank up for those terms on my money site? Or can the buffer just be about acne in general, and I use the long tails I want to rank up for as some of the anchor text?

You can use the long tails as anchors or you can use them in the title of the web 2.0 article. You can also use them in the article body and use partial kw-s in the title.

I'd use the general acne road. Just to show google that that web 2.0 is related in acne

I'd make the buffer article about the exact keyword I'm trying to rank for. Passes on more link relevance.

I think including the exact keyword AND related keywords in content of the web 2.0 will help most - I think Google are relying more and more on context of backlinks rather than just the anchor text now.

You don't 'have to' use them, but it would certainly help. You want the whole article looking like it covers the whole subject around the main KW, so you want LSI/longtail KWs in your web2.0s as well as your website for sure.

This is a tough question, as you can see from the different opinions. You should use diverse anchors without forgetting your target ones as well.
