Question About VHS to DVD Converters

Almost time to move again - I had a question about old commercial VHS movies we have that are piling up. Would like to convert them to DVDs to save space. Can you actually use a VHS to DVD converter to transfer or convert commercially made movies? I'm sure this is probably somehow illegal - which I don't necessarily care about per se. I don't plan on selling the DVDs, I simply want to convert them and then sell or throw out the VHSs. But, is there anything specific on the VHSs that would disable/disallow a transfer to be done? Also, does anyone have any suggestions about a product that can do this? I don't want software or a cable. I specifically want a machine type of converter like this:

Just to inform that link you stated is invalid and also it will be bit difficult finding a machine or somewhat, I think personally, using cables to convert VHS to DVD would be much easier.

I don't know the answer to your main question, but can answer the question about protection. Yes some VHS tapes have protection on them and can mess up the transfer. I think it's called macrovision but not sure.

Had a friend a while back that helped to convert a few of my old VHS tapes to DVD, but I think he did it via his computer.

You can get a DVD player that will handle multiple regions. Just do a search for "multi region DVD player". They are pretty cheap now.
