Question About Ubuntu

Hey Guys,

Just a general q about Ubuntu. Who use ubuntu here? I need to know whether I can install window base app software if i use ubuntu?

Seems like a very stupid q but..i dont know..i would like to try it..

All your answer will be much appreciated.

alot more windows software is working under Wine these days. Depends on what software you want to run though. I havent had too many problems migrating over to ubuntu. Just about everything i use has an open source doppleganger out there somewhere. For everything else there is Wine. Here's a link to the database of currently supported apps.

I'll second that. And you have the added benefit of compartmentalizing your applications. It's really handy to have one VM for an autoposter, another for an autoresponder etc.

you can use a software named wine... you can ask this in ubuntu forums, there is a separate software for games.

One more thing, can you share your experience using ubuntu..is there any problem you ever face with the software?

I backup what jamie said. I've actually gained a few things by making a snapshot, installing free toolbars ("spyware") and collecting the free stuff, then removing the snapshot to leave a clean windows again

I have been running Ubuntu as my primary OS for the last few months. Definitely get virtualbox and configure a couple virtual xp machines especially if you use cracked software. If the virtual machine gets comprimised you can easily restore it without affecting your primary desktop.

I've been M$ free (except for VMs) for a few years now. It really started when I was pokerbotting and needed a stable and efficient platform to handle lots of VMs, but that's another story. I find linux pretty good for IM. There have been quite a few times when knocking together a bash script has saved me hours of time, and it's handy to be familiar with linux terminal commands when you have to do something with your webserver.

I mostly run Ubuntu (and a little Backtrack for fun on a netbook) and absolutely love it. If you're having any problems check out the Ubuntu forums/wiki - they're the reason I use Ubuntu over any other distro, the community support is first class.

The only things I miss are photoshop (though GIMP is almost as good, and better for web design IMHO) and gaming. And you can always dual boot to get your crysis fix...
