Everyone knows time on site is a ranking factor.

But what about time on page? If users quickly click on another internal link after getting to a page from SERP, does it affect that page's ranking?

If it does, would making internal link open in a new tab help?

would making internal link open in a new tab help

I don't think so, internal linking always should be open in the same tab and External links always should be open in a new tab, check other big sites and you will see it all

Shorter the time on page will also have effect on ranking.

Not sure about the time, but internal linking should be opened in the same tab. Next tab is not recommended.

What about dwell time then?
It's not a ranking factor. One reason for time on site, page, dwell time are not ranking factors it's because they can easily be manipulated. Technically everything can be manipulated but time on site, page and dwell time are completely outside of google algorithms control. Tests have been done with real users clicking on SERP and spending time on a website and have shown that it has no effect on ranking. On the other hand page load speed does matter.

Just to add to this, opening every (or too many) internal links in a new tab can be considered as a bad user experience, and user experience is a ranking factor.

Well, you have to measure two weights. Your visitor attention to what you are posting or do you want more money?

That would bring the bounce rate down, or to 0% for that interaction, which is a good thing. However a quick click will lower the retention time.

The best situation would be someone browsing the page for a couple minutes, then clicking on an internal link.

Could you explain why those metrics are “completely outside of G algorithms control”? And links/articles to the tests mentioned?

It's simple, things related to content like keyword placement, density just to name a couple although can be manipulated google can control how they process them as a ranking factor with their algorithm, give it more or less weight, punish websites that abuse it, these are physical things on a website that once placed don't change too often. The same goes for links. Based on some criteria google algo can label them as good or bad. You can not do that with visitors, I can hire a 100 real people to look up my keyword on SERP have them click my link, and stay on my page/site for hours on end. There is no way for google to tell if those visits are legit or not. As for articles, google it and you should find plenty of them.

I think visitor's time on our page it's not very important, the important factors is on bounce rate ratio.

The on-time site is the importance of google ranking signal.
It helps to spread ranking power around the website.

Visitors time in your page is one of the important thing. Shorter time in your page then the bounce rate will increase and its effect on ranking
