I have set up a structure in MS Visio to get more insight for my silo based website. But there are some questions that I can't answer, I have searched on this forum and I have rode the thread of PHPBuilt, but still left with questions.

1.What do you need to write on the homepage? Some content that is not mentioned in all other pages(silo, categories and supporting pages), just regular stuff like hey welcome to our website we are bla bla bla?
Or do link from within the homepage content to the silo pages?
2.Do you need to make a menu in the homepage with the main keywords that you are targetting, in other words the silo pages?
3.How to link to each other? Using exact keyword matches?
3. My structure is like this, for this purpose I am going to make it simple.

Home page (index pages what does this mean?)
Silo Page (site index= what does this mean?)
Category (content)
Supporting pages (content)

So I got this issue, when you as a visitor visit my website, you come on the homepage for example, then you find a interresting link and you click on it (link in content or in menu?) so, now you are on the silo page, (do I need to target a large keyword on this page (for example football)) on this page you have on the right a box with the category, when you click on the category you are on the category page (do I need to target a more specific keyword on this page? for example football in europe?), now on the category page you will see some supporting pages (in total 5).

I found another structure that is slight different from the above one.

The categories are silo pages that are supported by the supporting pages... and this is most confusing part of all....

1.What do you need to write on the homepage? Some content that is not mentioned in all other pages(silo, categories and supporting pages), just regular stuff like hey welcome to our website we are bla bla bla?

If you are trying to rank your Homepage from a specific Keyword, write +1000 article about this keyword and link to categories (only categories, no inner pages) with appropriate keywords

Or do link from within the homepage content to the silo pages?
2.Do you need to make a menu in the homepage with the main keywords that you are targetting, in other words the silo pages?

No problem as long as you are linking to your Category/Parent Silo Pages

3.How to link to each other? Using exact keyword matches?

Didn't get it? Link what to What, Categories to Categories.. Link with any appropriate keyword that describes your Main Silo Pages

3. My structure is like this, for this purpose I am going to make it simple.

It's pretty easier than that Homepage ----> Parent Silo Pages ----> Articles

Make your Silo Pages as the Category because you don't want deep linking. It won't be a good user experience to click 3 times to reach a certain article

Thank you you have cleared allot of questions. However I am going to follow your structure mentioned in your comment.
I am going to consider if I am going to rank the homepage, but I only want to rank for 3 keywords total of more than 50k month,
I have bought a expired domain (pr2) with a good domainname and great metrics, and it has some great backlinks as well I hope it will give me a boost, I know PHPBuilt has advised to start with a fresh domain in order to determine what can cause the good or bad ranking of a specific page.

So the structure would be like this:

Homepage
Silo page (category page)
5 supporting pages

Do these 5 supporting pages need to link as well to the homepage? And is it ok to link the category pages to each other?

I saw you participating on PHPBuilt awesome thread and did you got positive results from the silo structure? The reason why I am trying this approach is that, the founder of this structure has structured big companies online, and the fact that a experts (phpbuilt) is giving his tips, tricks and expirience away to this forum.

I think I am going to read that thread over and over till, for now thanks for the support.

No, the supporting pages do not need to link to the homepage.

No, don't link the category pages together.

Do these 5 supporting pages need to link as well to the homepage?
Nope. Don't ever break the Chain. Hompages link to The Categories and Categories link to Articles. Articles link to Categories and Categories link to Hompages. Articles Can't link to Homepages

And is it ok to link the category pages to each other?

Yes, It's totally okay. Categories can link to their Sub-Pages and Other Categories. But you dont link from Articles to another Article in another Category or to Another Category other than the Parent Category

ONE BIG NOTE: SILO Sites have no value unless you are going after +60 Articles website and you need +100 Pages to feel it's benefits :)

Hi,

I've been into siloing since Bruce Clay's secret got out 5 or 6 years ago

I've identified 32 different ways of siloing (16 if you use a CMS such as wordpress)

Some of the above posts are giving conflicting advice regarding whether or not it's OK to link the category pages together

I do actually link the silo landing pages together - but not doing it is also correct - just a different way of doing it, and one of the many permutations of a silo site

I build silo sites using LSI keyword discovery - so the silo landing pages should link together as they are all "related"

If you are making a "portal" type site where the silo landing pages are not related - such as "news", "weather", "politics", etc. then the silo landing pages should not link together, as they are unrelated

You also have to be very careful when analyzing any of the silo sites that Bruce Clay has developed, as he uses advanced techniques of link masking - such as iframes, ajax, etc. so you literally cannot believe your eyes when navigating one of the sites he's developed

You've probably already come across the big thread on siloing, but I'll place the link here just in case:
