Have any of you experienced VERY different volume once you begin to rank then what keyword planner or keyword tools show? I have built a site around a specific product that in google keyword tool says monthly search volume is 18,000 / month. but I began to rank for the term on the second page (bottom) and its been 3 months and the avg per day searches are like 100-200 per day. as in my impressions in webmaster tools says my site shows up only 200 times in the search results. It does not make any sense unless keyword tools are totally bs. Anyone experienced anything similar?

18000 is the TOTAL overall search volume for organic and paid traffic.

If you get ranked #1 for organic results, you get roughly 40% of the total traffic, which in this case would work out to 7200, then divide that by 30, so you end up with 240, which is approximately what you would get for this keyword at #1 spot.

I think you guys misunderstood me. So lets say my keyword is ' best guitar' keyword planner and other keyword tools show total monthly search volume as 18k. My site has been ranking for the keyword for the past 3 months on the second page. So in theory my site, even though on the second page should be included in the search results for 'best guitar' each time it is searched, regardless if the user clicks to the second page. If I login to google webmaster tools and look at the keyword data it shows that my site has come up in the search results only 100-200 times in a day. also in webmaster tools on the 30 day graph it shows that keyword impressions were only 1,100. I dont get any traffic to my site. so something is off, either it is not showing the data correctly or it is calculating the search results based on if the user click to the second page? I dono.

I see nothing wrong with the data. It's completely normal that only a very small percentage of people click to the 2nd page of google (your 100-200 per day out of ~18,000 monthly searches). Is is also completely normal that the CTR decreases with the ranking position.

Also, keep in mind that Google Search Console records an impression each time your URL appears in a search result for a user, regardless of whether or not the link has actually been scrolled into view.

Exactly, so in theory if the total monthly searches are 18k and my sites shows up in the results each time it is searched(even if on the second page) then why isnt my daily impression count in webmaster tools 600 which would be 18,000 \ 30 days a month.? my impressions for the last 30 days for the keyword are a bit over 1,000. currently my daily impressions are 100 to 250 and the 30 day total for the keyword show 1100.

I am not a tech guy but I think this is the reason, think how could Google count a impression if a site didnt show up at all? That would means every site, in the index count each time, that would means a damn high usage of power right? I have no idea too, hope someone else clear this.

I honestly dont know. I mean it would seem it would be possible. Thats why I was hoping others on here could give some input. I have seen a few examples of sites taht I own where the keyword data seems WAY off. From what is reported by keyword tools to what my sites actually rank for in volume terms. I would not think it would be that difficult to count impressions per search term. I can give screenshots to help show you what I mean

In my experience, if your KW is on page 2, then you only get impressions from the people that click on page 2, not the first search results.

Here Are The Screenshots of what I mean. As you can see google keyword tool and keyword finder both show 18k and high search volume. My google webmaster tools shows 200 impressions per day and only 1,100 impressions the last 30 days so that is a difference of fucking 17,000 impressions based on the 30 day spread. What do you guys think?

How much experience do you have? This would seem more likely as to why the data is off, but i am not 100% sure that is correct. I thought that regardless of what page your site is on in the results if it shows up in the 'results' it should count as an impression in webmaster tools. Anyone confirm this?

I had a KW that was on the top of page 2, and then it climbed to the bottom of page 1 a few weeks later. I just checked webmasters. It went from 5-8 impressions a day to 42-50. I only have one KW that I know of, that was on page 2 that made it to page 1, so I don't have a larger sample size than that.

hmm, interesting. I guess if that was the case as it only counts impressions if a search user clicks to the page that your site is on in the results and not just all results pages for that term. Does anything else have any input? This is very helpful to everyone I believe.

Keyword planner data is just an estimate, what you will get is a small percentage.

No. Impressions are recorded only when your link is in the displayed results. If the user is viewing the 1st page and your results is on the 2nd page, that's zero impressions.

Also, you don't have any page filters set on your query. So, your 1,100 impressions could easily be over several pages, which rank for the same query. If so, and depending on the situation, you could have more impressions recorded per search.

Ok, well that makes way more sense then. So Google will only display an 'impression' in google webmaster tools if the user clicks to the page your site is listed in the index. So in theory if I can get my site on the first page the 'impressions' should jump drastically?
