a) How did Panda affect SEO and what changes should webmasters make to avoid being caught in the Panda trap?

Panda affects only big guns. Not lower or medium level webmasters.
 
Panda's supposed to penalize sites with unoriginal content. In theory at least...
 
you need to focus on unique and high quality content. Some sites have been slapped big time so if you have dups make sure to remove it...
 
I'm really curious about the whole dup thing. There are sites that have a lot of dup content on purpose, such as Rottentomatoes and metacritic. Doesn't look like Panda's affected them much. Maybe it's the smaller and mid-level webmasters that get hit the hardest?
 
Panda mostly affect the site with crap or duplicate content =Content farms.

you can get out of panda, with web 2.0 backlink and HIGH PR backlinks.

and posting unique content.

To make your link building more natural looking. If real people were to be linking to your site chances are some of them would mispell the keyword the odd time.
