Ok so I have a old domain name I've had, and I'm thinking about making a wordpress site. Do I need to pay for hosting or is there any free way I can set it up?

Use free web hosting and most of the free good webhosts do allow wordpress on their servers though its highly recommended you go for a paid reputed host so as to ensure that your site won't be taken down for any reason unless you void their tos, you enjoy a good uptime and faster pageload speed

I would suggest going with a paid hosting option. You can find some great hosting deals/coupons here on the forum. I can host 25 separate Wordpress sites on a single GoDaddy deluxe hosting plan, not including Wordpress MU for about $5 a month.

Paid hosting is the way to go... Host Gator has hosting for a couple dollars a month and its a very easy process.

As suggested here go for a small hosting package with Hostgator. You will find that when you have built your first site you will most likely want to build more anyway.

Their plans can be seen on their website

    Code:
    http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml
For starting up with 1 website you can choose to go with the hatchling plan but as it only allows you to use 1 domain on the hosting account, once you plan to build more websites you can always upgrade your hosting plan
