Question about Link building and Inner Pages

So I have a question about link building to inner pages.

What i've traditionally done is, like most others, had a inner page targeting a different keyword. I would have the keyword anchored back to my main page on every inner page. EX if the keyword was "bowls and cups" on the inner page kitchen.com/bowls-and-cups there would be a contextual link for "bowls and cups" leading back to "kitchen.com.

When I first started ranking for the keyword "bowls and cups" it would be the inner page, but overtime it changed to the "kitchen.com" it's happened for a few keywords so far.

My question is, should I keep backlinking the inner page for that keyword? Or the main page. The main page is what is ranking, but it is not SEO optimized for that keyword. The inner page is super SEO optimized for that keyword, has many backlinks for that keyword but is not ranking.

The issue here is that you're passing keyword-authority to your home page for the term you want the deep page to rank for.

You should have your home-page (or a category page - using siloing) linking to your deep page, and pass the keyword-authority DOWN the line, along themed (long-tail) groups.

Your link back to your home page should have anchors that are suited to the SEO of your home-page.

Using your current methodology, all your keywords will be pointing to your home-page - which is back-to-front, and why you're ranking for deep-page terms with the home-page.

Try pointing your deep pages at each other with the correct phrase pointing to the right page. And make sure you're homepage is passing authority back down to the deep pages - or all the 'juice' will end up at the home-page (which can be a good thing in some cases - but not if you're trying to rank sub-pages.)

Yeah you understood it . I don't really mind which page ends up ranking [I would rather the Main Page, it looks so authoritative] I just want to know should I continue backlinking the inner page for the inner page keyword or start backlinking the main page for the inner page keyword since it's the one ranking. Also my main page is a static page so nothing ever changes on it.
