question about keyword competition

So i had a few keywords in mind, googled them to see first page results. All websites ranking are high authority, including gov. Their homepages has million of backlinks, but actual keyword page has only few backlinks. So question is, if new website can outrank authority website for specific keyword having more backlinks.

I hope this make some sense.

Yes it can be done provided you take care of on page SEO and supplement it with backlinks along with social signals.

You need to learn more about keyword research. Use the search function of the forum, you will find tons of threads, read them and then do your research.

You can still outrank high authority websites. Domain authority is just 1 of the 200 parts of Google's search ranking algorithm.

It really depends. In which niche are you in?Yes you can outrank a high authority domain name if there page is not optimised well or has low backlinks.Look for the weak places and work up from there. Yes keyword competition of the first 3 spots is enough. Try to use authoritive backlinks and use social signals: likes,tweets etc

I'm not any close to pro but I really like SEO aspect of niche site building.
So I like to look on these signs when it comes to the first 10 places in Google SERP:

1. Is these sites/pages targeting my keyword?
2. How many backlinks they have?
2.1 How many QUALITY backlinks they have?
3. How good is their content? Are they adding value for visitor?

Try to compare it with your idea of your niche site. Can you have more backlinks and better content?
