Question about how to backlink?

I am a bit confused when it comes to backlinks and cateogory. So I have been linking niche to niche or super close and it has worked thus far, not perfect but it has worked. I have been studying a bit and finding that a lot of people with 100 or less links are getting away with first 100 links or less And *General Blogs*

Someone elses words here but I am studying a few sites and trying to figure out or *reverse engineer* some of their working strategies.

1. I was under the impression that these general blogs are unhelpful becasue it is not niched out
2. I have been pestering people in my city or region only but I see blogs in Austin Texas from countries in Ireland or Dubai as best links.


My question is general blogs are not niche, but they are not bad?
Is there a percentage general blogs vs Niche sites to rank well?
Right now I am 30-50% niche links

if they have authority, or topical relevance they're OK. It's true that most backlinks nowadays need to be niche relevant, but some niches (casino / gambling, for example) sometimes need power over topicality, and for this backlinks from sites / pages with high DR or UR (UR even better actually, but DR will work too) are more recommended.

In general for tough keywords and niches authority sometimes works better than topicality

This being said, it's possible that those general blogs that you're speaking of are not the real reason the sites rank, it's possible that these sites have way better links which are hidden from SEO tools (which is common practice nowadays), so you're unable to see them, but google can see them, which is why google ranks those blogs while you - wrongly - assume that it's the general blogs that are doing the trick :)

none that I know of. And as a matter of fact I am pretty sure that it depends on competition / keyword toughness

if your niche and / or keywords are not tough I think you could rank better with even higher percentages. If your niche and / or keywords are tough you should probably aim for power (PBNs, niche edits, mentions) instead of guest posts and other topically related backlinks.

Just my 2 cents, what works could always be something different, of course! But if I were you that's how I would most likely approach my link building

General blogs aren’t automatically bad. If they have authority and traffic, their links still pass value even if not niche.
 
General blogs are not bad as long as the content context matches your topic. You’re sitting in a good range already (30–50% niche). I’d aim to keep niche links as the backbone.

A niche blog can indeed be more effective than a general one, particularly when focusing on authority and the structure of its links. A well-defined niche blog, bolstered by strong backlinks and a robust internal linking strategy, will generally outperform a general blog in search engine rankings.
 
There's a interesting strategy. The only strategy I have taken is literally just going to different forums and communicating and contributing to the forums, it seems to be going well. Also, it just makes sense because it takes work and effort to be apart the different groups.
 
I'm pretty sure a link from a contextual article (or even a paragraph) on a general blog with high metrics will have good authority value (say, 'Queen' level), but not as much as from a well structured niche site with high metrics (or 'King' level). It's one of those blind spots we have few case studies to at last clear up---what site backlinks will have stronger effects on ranking, a niche domain supported by primarily Queen links, or King links?
 
High authority general niche sites are as good as niche sites. If the content is relevant, you can build those links to improve your site authority.
