So let's say I want to buy a domain for the following keyword: "blue laptops"

I search for bluelaptops dot com and it's taken, but laptopsblue dot com isn't taken. If I purchase the laptopsblue domain and start ranking it for the blue laptops keyword, would it be the same for search engines as having a bluelaptops domain? I mean both of the key-words are in the domain name, so shouldn't it be the same?

I don't know the answer to your question but have you considered something like

buybluelaptop or bluelaptopstore or just adding a word at the beginning or end so
the keyword you want is in the correct order.

Use your main cometitors domain name and put an hyphen in between the URL ...then you will rankwell for the search

If this is a pure seo play, go with blue-laptops.com or even the .net
I do this for escorts all the time and it always seem to rank above the pure play .com
    best of luck
