What link building strategies are the best? I heard you shouldn't add more than 5-10 links per day for domains that are this young. Does anyone have other information?

Would the 5-10 links/day limit also apply to directory site submissions? Or is it only certain types of links (articles, etc)

    Thanks guys!

    Killcrush,

You definitely shouldn't add too many links every day. There isn't really a set amount that will send up a red flag but adding more than a few every day may start to be pushing it. Just remember to vary your anchor text and don't use spammy sites to link from such as external article properties like wordpress.com. Using a couple of these would be alright but don't overdo it.

Also, you can make your domain look better by registering it for more than 6 months or a year. If you are in it for the long term, it looks much better to register a domain name for 5 to 10 years. This indicates that you are in it for a while and not just setting up a website for spam purposes.

Here is a good resource for you,

Nice and easy does it for new domains. And in general quality over quantity is always a wise choice.

    Depends on more than age.
How many viable URL's do you have to link to? (internal pages with a decent amount of unique content)
While "5 a day" might be a decent rule of thumb (Google "Blue Hat Demon" for a pretty precise way of measuring the right amount BTW) it does depend on more than site age alone.

Think of your site on a URL by URL basis rather than just the root domain.

And any resource from SEOMOZ is not worth the virtual paper it's puked up on. SEOMOZ = over priced, self righteous (but still black hat under the surface) bullshitters.

Thanks for the suggestions! I just registered the domain for 5 more years - thanks for reminding me about that.

Regarding your comment about wordpress.com and external article properties, your saying i should be very careful about livejournal, blogger and wordpress type sites? Even if i write unique and original content and link back to the young domain? Does google penalize this more for newer domains?

I've done that with older more mature domains with excellent results, but never with a new domain.

Right now there's only a few pages available, but I'm planning on putting a blog and regularly updating with relevant original content. I hope that raises the profile a bit. Is what were talking about here the "authority" of the domain?

I read a few places that getting high PR backlinks is a good place to start. I have a few other sites with PR1 , PR2 and PR5 -- would that be a good place to start?

The bottom line here is that I'd hate to have to wait 6 months before getting a bit more agressive. The keywords are localized but still substantially competative in the end. I've never done it with a new domain as I mentioned and getting blacklisted or shunned would be horrible.

One additional question : With respect to watching my numbers when building backlinks, should I also watch when submitting the site to directories? Do directories count as much? Or can I safely submit to 1,000 directories in a day?

Go slowly, and think logically. Think about natural link building and how real people sharing info about your site all over the web.
    That's a key!
